There are stories about your family you’ve never thought to ask.

The Story Project helps you discover those stories while the people you love are still here to tell them, and preserves their voices for the years ahead. A meaningful prompt gives your Family VIP somewhere to begin. A simple link lets them click and record. No app to download. No login for them. No complicated setup.

From the founder

Why I built this

I created The Story Project because I wanted to preserve the stories of someone important in my own family.I’m not only the founder, I’m a customer, too. I know how easy it is to love someone deeply, care about their stories, and still keep putting off the conversation. The Story Project was created to make beginning simple.

The questions

The Stories We Never Think to Ask About

You know the big facts about the people you love. The Story Project helps you discover the smaller stories hiding behind them.

Where they grew up.
What work they did.
Who they married.

But there are also the smaller stories:

  • The phrase their mother used to repeat
  • The decision that changed the direction of their life
  • The funniest thing that happened when they were young
  • The challenge they never talk about
  • The ordinary moment they still remember clearly

These are often the stories families wish they had asked about sooner.

The Story Project gives your family an easy way to begin.

Who it's for

What Is a Family VIP?

A Family VIP is anyone whose stories matter to your family—a parent, grandparent, great-uncle, aunt, mentor, or other loved one you want future generations to know.

The title matters less than the person.

If their voice, memories, and perspective are important to your family, they belong in The Story Project.

The experience

The Prompted Story Experience

One meaningful prompt can open a story you never knew was there.

Most people do not need more pressure to “write their life story.”

They need a place to begin.

The Story Project sends one specific prompt at a time. Here are a few examples:

What is one of your earliest childhood memories, and what happened that day?

Prompt 1

Share a time you got into trouble when you were young.

Prompt 2

What was your home like growing up? Can you describe a day there that you still remember clearly?

Prompt 3

Who was someone you admired as a child, and what did they do that stayed with you?

Prompt 4

Tell us about your favorite friend growing up and an adventure you had together.

Prompt 5

What is the funniest thing you remember happening at school?

Prompt 6

Tell us about a teacher who made a difference in your life.

Prompt 7

What was your first job, and what happened on your first day?

Prompt 8

Share a time you worked very hard for something and how it turned out.

Prompt 9

How did you meet your spouse or partner? What do you remember most about that time?

Prompt 10

Share the story of a memorable date, dance, party, or celebration from your younger years.

Prompt 11

What was a family holiday or tradition that you looked forward to every year?

Prompt 12

Prompts like these can help your Family VIP revisit a real memory instead of staring at a blank screen wondering what to talk about.

It gives them a doorway into a story.

And it gives your family a question you may never have thought to ask.

Here's A Look Inside The Story Project

"My dad passed two years ago. We have a handful of photos and a few videos from holidays, but nothing where he's just talking to us. Nothing where he's telling us who he was. I set this up for my mom as soon as I heard about it. I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice. The first story she recorded, just from one prompt, is something our whole family will have forever. I can't put a price on that."

— Karen T., Ohio

Built for the questions you wish you'd asked sooner

How it works

The simplest thing we've ever asked them to do.

We removed everything that scares them about technology, so the only thing left is the part that matters: their voice.

1. You sign up for them

Add your VIP — Mom, Dad, Grandma — in two minutes. Choose email or text message. That's the only setup, and you do all of it.

2. We send a warm prompt

Every ~12 days, a large-text message arrives in their inbox. One thoughtful question. One big orange button that says Record Your Story.

3. They tap. They talk.

No login. No app. Their phone camera opens, they speak from the heart, and tap Keep. We save, transcribe, and tuck it into your family's private gallery.

4. You watch. Forever.

Invite the whole family to watch. Their voice, their face, their stories — searchable and safe. The archive you'll wish you started ten years ago.

This is what your VIP sees. Nothing confusing here!

"I'll be honest, I never would have done this on my own. I wouldn't even know where to start. But the question just showed up on my phone, there was one big button, and I just... started talking. Before I knew it I'd told a story I haven't thought about in forty years. My daughter called me crying. I didn't realize how much that would mean to her."

— Dorothy M., Florida

YOU MIGHT BE THINKING

What if they don’t actually use it?

That was one of our biggest questions, too. In an early pilot:

8 out of 10 Family VIPs recorded their first story independently on their first attempt.

The other 2 needed only minor help granting their browser permission to use the camera and microphone.

The goal is not to make your loved one learn another complicated system.

The goal is to make recording one meaningful story simple enough to begin.

Family Access

One family space for the stories that matter.

When a Family VIP records a story, it is organized under their name inside your family account.

Family members can:

  • Receive notifications when new stories are recorded
  • Log in as family administrators or invited viewers
  • Browse stories by Family VIP
  • Press play and listen together
  • Invite as many family viewers and Family VIPs as they would like

Your subscription is based on Family Story Credits, not the number of people in your family.

Founding Family Offer

Start with the first story. Keep the rest for later.

You do not need to plan a formal interview.

You do not need to know every question you want to ask.

You only need one person whose story matters, and one prompt that helps them begin.

"After Dad passed, I'd give anything to hear him tell the story of how he met Mom. That's what The Story Project is... that recording, before it's too late."

— A note from our founder

Why founding members matter

The first fifty set the tone for everyone who follows.

You'll be the friend who tells everyone at Thanksgiving, "Do this for your parents. Don't wait." You'll be the one who has a decade of stories saved while others are still meaning to start.

Your feedback shapes how we build for every family that comes after. In a very real way, you help design the archive that outlasts all of us.

The questions we keep meaning to ask

  • How did you and Mom really meet?
  • What was your father like as a young man?
  • What's the hardest decision you ever made?
  • What do you hope we remember about you?

Ten prompts a year, one at a time, becomes a priceless video library. A decade becomes a life story.

"I only get to see my grandparents a couple times a year. I always felt like I didn't really know them, not their real lives, just the grandparent version of them. The first story my grandpa recorded through The Story Project was about growing up, things he's proud of, things he regrets. I feel like I actually know him now. That's not something I expected from an app."

— Jake S., Colorado

The Vault — included for founders

Some stories are meant for one person.

While recording, your loved one can seal a story for one specific family member, a grandchild, a partner, a child, anyone dear. That story is stored privately in the Vault, and no one else, not even the family admin, can open or watch it.

When the family admin marks their passing, the Vault begins to unlock. After a seven-day grace period, each sealed story is delivered privately by email to the person it was reserved for, a final, quiet gift in their own voice.
